The lights will be lit on the Hamburg Christmas tree for the 60th time on 29 November at 17:00 during a festive ceremony and to the accompaniment of merry music, courtesy of the Hafnarfjörður Brass Band.
When the ceremony ends, guests at Miðbakki harbour are invited by Brim to enjoy fish soup at Landsbankinn, Reykjastræti 6.
Yule lads and an accordion player entertain guests and play holiday tunes.
The event is hosted by Landsbankinn, Faxaflóahafnir, Brim, Harpa, Hafnartorg, Sjómannadagsráðið and the German-Iceland Chamber of Commerce.
Programme
- Christmas greetings from Faxaflóahafnir.
- Germany’s ambassador to Iceland, Clarissa Duvigneau, lights the Hamburg tree.
- Yule lads sail into the old harbour on Magni, dock at Miðbakki, and entertain the kids before leading all guests on to enjoy fish soup and further festivities at Landsbankinn.
Icelandic seamen who docked at Hamburg after WWII invited hungry children at the harbour to partake of their fish soup during unshipping. In gratitude, port authorities in Hamburg in 1965 began sending a Christmas tree to Reykjavík harbour to light up the harbour over the holidays.
For environmental reasons, the tree is no longer shipped over from Germany and Faxaflóahafnir have in recent years purchased a tree from Land og skógur (previously Skógræktin).
We look forward to seeing you!
