A new exhibition, opened in Reykjastræti 6 on Reykjavík Culture Night, showcases pieces in the Bank’s collection by female artists. We also opened a new section of our gallery website, dedicated to around 90 pieces by women.
Landsbankinn’s collection holds numerous pieces classified as national treasures, many of which are by women. The exhibition marks the occasion of the Women’s Year 2025. Sigrún Inga Hrólfsdóttir, visual artist, curated the exhibition. The exhibition is located on the ground floor of Reykjastræti 6 and is open to all between 9:00-17:00 throughout the year.
Around 90 pieces be women on the gallery website
In 2009, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture commissioned a professional valuation of the Bank’s collection. It was suggested that pieces in category I would become public property, that category II pieces should not be sold without consulting with the National Gallery of Iceland and that category III pieces would be offered on loan to cultural institutions. Around 90 pieces that fall into these categories are showcased on the gallery website. By making these important pieces available on our website, our aim is to facilitate access to national treasures.
Overcame obstacles
In a longer article published on Landsbankinn’s gallery website, Sigrún Inga Hrólfsdóttir discussed female artists. She points out that female artists are currently better placed than ever before yet that the stories of female artists past are in danger of being forgotten. “In recent years, awareness has been growing and an effort made to shine a light on their work to rebalance the scales. This exhibition is part of this effort , showning female artists and their work in a new light and in more detail. Despite various obstacles, they refused to be stopped and went against typical gender stereotypes. In so doing, they all helped make inroads for later female artists.”
