Landsbankinn extends solution for Grindavík

Austurbakki
18 January 2024

When the seismic and volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula began, Landsbankinn offered all inhabitants of Grindavík payment deferral for a six-month period and cancelled interest and inflation-indexation on housing mortgages for three months. In light of the severity of the situation, we have now decided to extend the period of cancellation of both interest and indexation on housing mortgages by another three months, until the end of April.

Most of our customers have accepted the offer to defer payments for six months. The Bank has also supported the people of Grindavík by other means, such as by cancelling fees on rent guarantees.

Cancellation of interest and indexation is an extremely unusual step taken in response to the unprecedented situation in Grindavík. By extending the cancellation period, we hope to also give the authorities enough time to work on long-term solutions for the people of Grindavík.

Our thoughts are with the people of Grindavík and Landsbankinn’s employees will contact our Grindavík customers in the next few days to help them take advantage of the extension.
