Landsbankinn advertises for sale its buildings at Austurstræti 11 and Hafnarstræti 10, 12 and 14 in Reykjavík. The combined size of the buildings is 5,836 square metres, including 1,380 square metres of basement area. The buildings will be sold as one lot.
The Landsbankinn building at Austurstræti 11 is one of the most impressive buildings in the city. It was raised in 1898 and rebuilt and enlarged in 1924 using drawings by Guðjón Samúelsson, who also designed all interior fittings. An annex to the house was taken into use in 1940. Austurstræti 11 attained listed status in 1991 and the listing extends to the building’s exterior, wall art and internal fittings from 1924.
Hafnarstræti 10-12 was called the Edinburgh house and was constructed according to drawings by Einar Erlendsson in 1923. Originally three stories high, the fourth floor was a later addition. Hafnarstræti 14 was built in 1970. The ground floor is linked internally to the atrium of Austurstræti 11.
In 2023, Landsbankinn moved its operations from a total of 12 buildings at Austurstræti, Hafnarstræti and Tryggvagata to its new building at Reykjastræti 6. The Icelandic government originally showed interest in acquiring Austurstræti 11 but it is now clear that the purchase will not eventuate.
