21 February 2025

On 20 February 2025, the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) launched an ISK 8.5 billion environmental bond in its first issuance in the ISK bond market in over 16 years. The bonds are issued under NIB’s Environmental Bond Framework. Landsbankinn coordinated promotion and sale of the bonds to investors.

The bonds are seven-year and inflation-linked. In its announcement, NIB describes the issuance as a significant milestone. NIB is pleased to return to the Icelandic bond market and to include ISK in its diversified funding currency mix, and to be the first foreign issuer to issue in the domestic ISK market since 2008. This bond issuance allows NIB to better serve customers in Iceland seeking ISK financing for their investments, so the announcement.

Eyrún Anna Einarsdóttir, Managing Director of Asset Management & Capital Markets at Landsbankinn: “We are very pleased with the outcome of this highly successful bond sale and our collaboration with NIB, which I am confident will continue. It is a signal of the strength of the Icelandic financial market that such a robust international financial institution is once again issuing bonds in Iceland after a long absence. NIB holds an AAA credit rating and the volume of demand in the auction demonstrates that Icelandic investors have a strong interest in including such bonds, issued by NIB, in their portfolios.”

Economic forecast to 2028: Slow economic growth in Iceland
The cooling trend in the domestic economy looks set to continue longer than previously predicted. Economic growth will be modest and mainly export driven. The outlook is for 4.8% inflation this year and it is likely that the policy rate will be raised to 8.25%, also this year. There are signs of slackening in the labour market, with increasing unemployment and lower demand for workers.
